Altar Checklist

First let's break it down to the basics and shoot around some ideas.

What is the purpose of this altar?

Is it a place to honor a dead relative?

Is an altar for a Goddess or God?

Is it special spot to work magick?

Is it a sacred space for meditation?

Clarify what the purpose of this altar is altar and you're well on your way!

~ Size and Placement ~

Do you want others to know this is your "altar" or are you still in the broom closet and need something you can tuck away?

What size do you want it to be..small...medium...large?

Do you want a shelf high on the wall or is going to be something you stand, sit or kneel before?

And where is it going?

Different than placement...lol. Location is the actual spot in the room where your altar will be. Many Pagans face theirs to the North. You can face it towards the element you're working with or perhaps you're looking to create an altar for faery magick, in which case you would probably choose a westward direction. Maybe you would like to bring a little feng shui energy into play.

Choosing your location works best when you are comfortable with it. If you go by a book that tells you it must be placed here...and that "here" happens to be the darkest, most dreary corner of your home, do you really think you're going to get a positive result out of it.

Cleanse before you start.

You really want to clear any and all negativity that might have built up in that section of your home. If you are planning on a full ritual altar, it is my personal suggestion that you cleanse the entire home prior to set up, or at the very least, prior to its first use.
