Herbal Scrubs Basics

Making your own body scrubs at home are not only a great way to save money, you can cut out the chemicals, and customize them for perfection.

They are simple to create, most ingredients are probably already in the pantry and since they're quick to throw together, they will always be fresh!

So lets getting going on getting you glowing.....

First choose your exfoliant.

You can use sea salt, kosher salt, table salt or epsom salt. You can customize the size of the grains using a food processor or coffee grinder.

Oatmeal is a gentle addition, and it will not only act as an exfoliant, it will add moisture as it strips away the dead skin.

Yum. Any sugar you choose will work. I like brown sugars as they smell delicious and warm.

Yes coffee grains act wonderfully as an exfoliant and you receive the added benefits of caffiene. When applied topically caffiene can reduce cellulite and greatly improve circulation. It is also said to work wonders on varicose veins.

Crushed they work wonderfully as an exfoliant. A little more expensive however, then most of the other choices.

Milk and yogurt contain lactic acids which help to dissolve dead skin cells without the scrub of the granular choices.

Here's where your oil will come into play. Jojoba, sunflower, sweet almond, olive, flaxseed... the list can go on. The oil is what will make the scrub easy to apply, and while the exfoliant is scrubbing away the dead skin, the moisterizing oil will be tending to the newly exposed skin.

You can also added lotion along with the oil. Shea butter and cocoa butter are wonderful, natural additions. About a tablespoon will do.

Scent and Attributes

Essential oils and herbs is where you will gain the main attributes of your homemade scrub. The lists and combinations are endless. The main Herbal Beauty page contains a list of essential oils with their beauty attributes.

If you're adding actually herbs you can soak them in the "scrub oil" of your choice prior to adding them. Warming them gently on the stove and letting them steep will allow their oils to be released.
